What is a witch?
To me, a witch is someone who connects to the world and works with intentional energy to live their best lives.
A lot of people practice my definition of witchcraft but prefer to call it something else, and I’m okay with that.
I don’t care what you call it – if you appreciate the beauty in the world around you and try to always be the best version of yourself, we can be friends.
Do you worship the devil?
No. I don’t believe in any deities, gods, goddesses or angels, fallen or otherwise. I can’t worship them if I don’t believe in them.
Unfortunately, throughout history, plenty of religions have used the devil, or an “evil” spirit, to condemn anyone who believed in something other than their gods, books and churches.
While there are many beliefs among witches, I don’t believe in any powerful devil exists in my world.
What kind of witch are you?
I use the energy of the elements and the night sky, mostly – think plants, crystals, candles, smoke and scents, water, moon cycles and astrology.
Storms and cold weather fill me with inspiration and energy.
My practice tends to revolve around my home and family, so people tend to describe me as a “Hearth Witch”.
I love using tarot and oracle cards for guidance, and focus on shadow work and journaling for self improvement.
While I believe in the adjoining spirit world, I choose not to work with it.
There are no real definitions for me, so I like to just call it “modern magick”.
What is magick?
Magick is connecting your own energy, with the energy of things around you.
Most of the time, choosing intentions with which to use that energy is a big reason people like to practice magick, but you can find the magick in every day – being full of joy thanks to a hot cup of coffee, finding inspiration in the petals of a rose, seeing nothing but hope in the twinkling eyes of a child.
Magick is recognising and connecting to the energy all around you.
Practicing magick is putting intention into that energy to create outcomes.
Is your husband a wizard?
No. My husband doesn’t practice the craft. He does, however, join me in my own practice and celebrations sometimes – especially the ones that involve feasts and camping!
Do you have a coven?
While I practice alone and don’t belong to an organised coven, I do love the Casual Coven.
The Casual Coven allows witches of all kinds to join with other witches, to create, celebrate and cultivate their craft without having to commit to any regular meetings.
In this modern world, most witches are so busy in their day-to-day lives, joining a full-on coven is simply impractical and, sometimes, impossible.
Organised covens also tend to come with a lot of inner politics and hierarchy – solitary practitioners tend to struggle with these concepts, prefering to figure it out alone.
The casual coven allows us solitary witches to experience the wonders of community, without all the drama.
